About Us

Compassion at the Heart of Counselling

At Minda Counselling, our mission is to walk together with you as you navigate stress, trauma, or emotional challenges. We’re here to offer steady, professional support when you need it.

“Minda” means mind in Bahasa Malaysia

and that’s where our story begins.

We are a team of mental health professionals from diverse backgrounds, each bringing our own culture, experiences, and ways of understanding people. We believe that who we are – our upbringing, our journeys, and the stories we carry, shapes how we show up as therapists for people walking through our doors.

When we looked at the mental health landscape in Malaysia, we noticed that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) was the approach most people are familiar with. It’s undoubtedly an evidence-based and helpful method, but along the way, we realised that it doesn’t resonate with everyone. And that made us curious. We wanted to offer something on top of that, something that brings both the mind and the body into the healing process.

That’s how Observed & Experiential Integration (OEI) found its way into our practice. We’ve seen how OEI Therapy can support deeper emotional work, especially for clients who struggle to put their experiences into words. We’re still learning and growing with it, but we’re grateful to be able to share this approach in our homeland, Malaysia.

At Minda Counselling, we aim to meet you where you are, with compassion, respect and curiosity. Everyone deserves a space where their mind is heard and cared for.

Our Co-Founders

Lim Hao Yen & Sharyna Joy Lim

Our clinical director, Lim Hao Yen, is a Canadian-trained Malaysian clinical counsellor with a heart rooted in home. He set up Minda Counselling Canada back in 2022, shortly after what is arguably the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He is married to Sharyna Lim, a Canadian registered nurse. Together with their three lovely daughters, they made the decision to return to Malaysia and start a mental health clinic that feels grounded, accessible, and stigma-free. The family carries a heart for Malaysia, and has incubated that vision up to this point, where it can finally blossom.

After years of clinical practice and training, Hao Yen was introduced to OEI Therapy, a body-based approach that integrates eye movements, grounding, and sensory awareness. Experiencing its impact firsthand, he wanted to make this approach available to Malaysians who might benefit from more than traditional talk therapy alone.

Hao Yen and Sharyna practice mindfulness and discernment, making sure that mental health in Malaysia can be approachable, highlighted and taken care of. Minda Counselling Malaysia aims to serve and support those in need.

We possess many specialities and take an eclectic approach to tailor treatments for each individual.
